Lately I feel like we have had people in and out of our house quite a bit whether it’s to see Liam or because we have invited them over for dinner. Because of the new babe and because a lot of times we invite people over on a whim, there have been quite a few instances where I don’t have a ton of time to get the house super clean before people come over. Or a more common instance is that I will forget we are having people over until 15 minutes before they arrive #mombrain
While I usually love to have the house looking fabulous before people arrive at our place, sometimes there just simply isn't enough time to get it all done and I have had to let go of the idea that everything needs to be perfect. However, there are a few tips that have helped that take very little time and make me feel like I at least have it a little bit together.
FOCUS ON THE ROOMS THAT MATTER MOST
I always take just a minute to figure out which spaces in my house are the most important to clean before guests arrive. If I’m running low on time, I usually just clean the kitchen/dining, guest bath, and living room. Our upstairs is just our master suite so I don’t worry about that, and I usually close the door to my office if it’s just horrendous (which if we’re being honest, is a lot of the time). Narrowing the focus to these rooms cuts cleaning time.
With the above point being said, I don’t deep clean each of those spaces (because 15 minutes is not a lot of time, y’all). I usually make sure everything is put away, wipe down the surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom, put a fresh hand towel in the guest bath, and sweep the floor - that’s it!
LIGHT ALL THE CANDLES
If you haven’t learned by now, I love candles. In this case, I love them because they instantly make your space feel cozy and they help get rid of any lingering odors in your house before guests arrive. Also, dim lighting helps hide any dirty spots you miss so this point is a win, win, win!
KEEP FROZEN COOKIE DOUGH IN FREEZER
This is perfect for when you are having friends over last minute but want to have a little treat. If you make cookie dough and even pre-roll them into balls before putting them in the freezer, it makes this even easier. Just pull them out and pop them in the oven for a super quick and delicious treat for your friends. If you need a good cookie recipe, this one is my favorite.
THROW EVERYTHING IN A CLOSET
Yea, you’re probably laughing right now, but I’m serious. My office closet is the designated “hide-everything-that-doesn’t-belong” closet and when we are having people over on a whim, that sucker is full. I obviously don’t recommend this as a long term solution, but hey, you do what you gotta do. Oh, and if you ever come over to my house, promise you won’t look in that closet.
Like everything else, I just remember that my attitude and the attention I give to my guests is far more important than how clean my house is. So just figure out what you have time for, and do those things instead of trying to get every little thing done. I would love to hear simple ways you prepare for your guests - comment below with your tips!
