Cast iron skillets are the bomb-dot-com. I admit that I totally underestimated the wonder of a cast iron skillet up until a couple of years ago, but since then it is a go-to in the kitchen and I use it at least once a day. Because of this (and because of their general heft), ours has made its home on our stove and we rarely move it. In today's post I'm talking about why cast iron skillets are great, how to season and care for them, a few recipes I've used mine for and a fun little giveaway of - you guessed it! - a cast iron skillet of your very own!
WHY CAST IRON SKILLETS ARE LEGIT
Faster - In my opinion, skillets cook things faster. Anytime I cook chicken I use my skillet and it seems like they are done in no time compared to my normal skillet.
Flavor - There is something about cooking in a cast iron skillet that just makes food taste better. I don't know the scientific explanation for this, but I'm convinced it's because as you cook the flavors get absorbed into the skillet. All I know is that food that comes from an iron skillet is dang scrumptious.
Durable - These puppies are super heavy (one of the main reasons our stays on our stove), but they are also insanely durable which means I can cook to my heart's delight and it will keep up nicely.
Incredibly non-stick with no sketchy health concerns - Some regular non-stick skillets are suspected of being carcinogenic, but with cast iron, no need to worry!
HOW TO SEASON & CARE FOR A CAST IRON SKILLET
In order to be able to properly cook with your skillet, you need to season it first. Steps to a perfectly seasoned skillet are below!
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F
2. Wash your skillet with hot water and soap
3. Rub with olive oil, creating a thin layer
4. Place the skillet upside down in the preheated oven and bake for an hour
To care for your skillet after you have cooked in it, rinse it with hot water and lightly scrub with a sponge or stiff brush. Do not use soap! Using soap will de-season your skillet and you will have to season it again.
HOW I USE MY CAST IRON SKILLET
As I mentioned above, I use my skillet at least once a day to cook all kinds of different meals. My husband loves to use it in the morning to cook his eggs and bacon. He will even place bread on the skillet in the morning to toast it. Below I have included three recipes I've shared on Feast & Dwell where I used our skillet. All of these recipes are super easy and simple!
