There really isn't anything I love more than hosting a dinner and getting to set the table (something my mom used to have to force me to do growing up). My goal is for people to feel special and welcomed when coming into our home and having a nice place to feast and converse is something that is important to me. When putting together my table for Mother's Day, I wanted it to be something that I knew my mom would love and also make her feel special since after all - it's her day!
I knew I wanted the look of our dinner to be fresh, simple, and Spring-y and below you can find some of the things I kept in mind while coming up with this table set-up (psst! You can use these tips for every table you put together!)
choose an atmosphere
The weather has been teetering between Summer and Spring over here with lots of rain and some hot days, but lately, the weather has been pure magic. Eating outdoors is one of my all-time favorite things and with the weather being so nice, I decided on having Mother's Day dinner outside. Choosing where your table will be will also help in deciding what kind of decor you will have. Since I chose outside, my decor is a little more casual that an indoor dinner.
use items you already own
I didn't want to have to go out and buy a whole lot for this tablescape, so I pulled out all the napkins, flatware, plates, placemats and napkin rings I own and tried different combinations until I found one with the perfect Spring-y and simple look. I decided on some white and blue striped napkins from West Elm, our white plates, placemats, and silver flatware from Crate & Barrel, and some copper napkin rings I got at an antique store in Durango, CO. I finished the place setting off with crystal glasses that my grandmother gave me.
If you buy items, buy items you will use
The only thing I bought for this tablescape is the herbs and their pots. I have been wanting to buy more herb plants for quite some time, so I knew I would be buying them anyway. It just so happens that they are the perfect centerpiece for a simple table setting. You can actually find these pots on sale right now at West Elm!
All of these tips are things I keep in mind for every table setting I'm creating. As much as I love entertaining and making people feel special, I don't want to break the bank or go overboard.
